If you look reallllllllll carefully, you'll see that... it has always been there. There is no "phase." Cecil B DeMille remade his own epic movie The Ten Commandments. A Star is born has been done THREE times. Ben Hur twice, and those are just a few the big ones that stand out and right off the top of my head. The story of Christ, god knows how many times. Now as for squeals, ever heard of The Thin Man? Tarzan? Know what a serial is right? Now I'll give you this, sequels didn't become that prominent until the late 70s. Mostly due to Mr. Spielburg and the creation of the "Blockbuster." After that "Hollywood" realized that people will run to the theater to see awesome shite. So they probably thought,"Hey I bet people will run to go see that shite again!" And now we do.
