I have never seen or heard of doing this...does anyone use this method? Why would you basically half-kill a live shrimp? I just don't understand this theory.

Bite off the tail flappers..WTF?!?!?

If you're going to do all of that, you may as well buy market bait. What is the point of live bait if it can't move like it's alive?

Sounds like something to tell a fishing noob to mess with him.

As far as cutting off the tails,

he is right it will reduce wind resistance and increase casting distance, it will increase the scent/oil dispersal from the shrimp, and it may give you an nasty enteritis from chewing on live shrimp swimming in a baitwell.

I like to use shad a as bait but his lady likes to catch them: LINK

That sounds logical but it seems like I'm just trying to keep shrimp on the hook alive as long as possible. This can't help in that department.

Of course if the guy standing next to me is doing this and catching fish I'll bite their asses off all day.

It's a FL thing, my neighbors all do it when fishing with shrimp...

It's a different game over there. Real clear water and easily spooked fish where very long accurate casts are required. It's hard to appreciate how good our fisheries are in LA until you fish elsewhere a good bit. It does make you a better fisherman and on the rare occasion you come across similar situations here, you have a huge advantage over next guy provided you are prepared.

Correct. I've fished in FL in some redfish tournies and we use flouro leaders over there, whereas in LA, we tie straight to Power Pro with no flouro leaders. The fish there are so pressured, you need every advantage you can get, including longer casts, lighter line, flouro leaders, smaller hooks, whatever you can come up with to have an advantage.

You got that right. Fishin south Florida makes Louisiana seem like shootin fish in a barrel.
