Tyrion's totally right about the whore thing. Given his family, it's pretty vanilla.

Based solely on the show, does Tywin know that Jamie and Cersei are banging and popping out illegitimate kids?

well Stannis sent out a letter to the whole kingdom claiming it so he has to be at least suspicious of it

He never gives any sign that he knows. You can assume that he knows because he is not an idiot, or you can think that he hides it from himself because he doesn't want to think about his children that way. Ultimately, I don't think he cares. All that matters to Tywin is the survival and glory of the Lannister line.

Right, but if he does, in fact, know that two of his children are fricking each other (and that the world knows), then why would he care about Tyrion banging whores everywhere? That's what people do in those days apparently...especially rich ones.

Unless he just hates that Tyrion is a dwarf, and is using the whore angle to vent about that (but that can't really be it either since he also rags on him for being a dwarf anyway ).

This and he blames Tyrion for killing his wife in childbirth. Tywin is a huge hypocritical dick to Tyrion.

I think it's two-fold. Tywin explicitly told Tyrion not to bring her around and he did it anyway. He also hones in on Tyrion's flaws because he hates that Tyrion "killed" his wife in childbirth. It's pretty telling in the show that he mentions in that scene with Tyrion about wanting proof to prove that he isn't his. He looks upon Tyrion as a "failure" of the Lannister name and doesn't have any problem letting him know it.

True, but even still after all that...he still wants to protect him because he is a Lannister. Pretty boss for Tywin.

In his defense, until the time of the books, all Tyrion ever did was drink and frick. Being an imp took away a lot of his options in life, even as an aristocrat. The dull future his father describes was really the table that was set for him from birth - until he became his own man and took charge.

He's got a point about the whores, but what does he expect? Tyrion is a dwarf, not someone who attracts a lot of women, even though he' insanely rich.

I loved the part about Lannisters not needing recognition. I'd have blurted out "a-hole! You rode your fricking horse into the throne room to receive your adulation!"

ETA: and the turn Tyrion does when his father is halfway through the "the next whore...." line is pure "rich kid and his father" stuff. I've witnessed that more than once.
