Like it was yesterday.
Someone said that was the true changing of the guard when that happened.
And then it changed again when GSP beat Hughes the second time.
Lightweight bout: Spencer Fisher vs. Matt Wiman
Fisher wins by KO (flying knee) at 1:43 of round two.
I don't know but that had to be a candidate for KO of the year. That was nuts the way it went down.

What a joke. A main event freak show that belonged in Pride.

you can't tell me you didn't enjoy the promos where gracie was working out in his garage

or dana white announcing the fight saying about 11 times that matt hughes was the greatest welterweight of "all times"

Wasn't this fight sandwiched between his victories over GSP&Trigg and in his next fight against Penn?

Hughes was in his prime when they fought.
I would not call it a changing of the guard since it was two different weight classes and Royce was completely irrelevant at the time. However, I would say it showed the advancement and evolution of MMA skill sets. Much like Hughes vs GSP 2 and 3.
Royce dominated in a time where being skilled at one fashion of MMA was acceptable. Hughes came along and showed what could happen if you learned multiple art forms. GSP came along and showed what could happen if you added athleticism and stamina to those multiple arts.

I'm talking about fighting ability.
BJJ (Gracie), Wrestling-GNP (Hughes), to Complete Mixed Martial Artist (GSP)
Which GSP has just transitioned back to wrestling with a jab every now and then.
But what was meant by that was the changing of the guard in MMA not the fighters themselves
