The evolution of Carol's character on the show is arguably the most significant in terms of growth, development, and influence.
If anyone in the core group dies, it will be something very meaningful, as in an offering of themselves for the others - changing a situation or status of the group to some closure and ultimate "good".

She should take Maggie's place in the comics as far as being the leader of the Hilltop.

JMHO's
Real close race between her and Daryl. She's evolved into an independent, strong, stone-cold warrior- away from "feelings". Daryl on the other hand has developed from being a stone-cold, unfeeling loner into a leader capable of empathy. The two have sort of met in the middle. Though they may look and act totally different on the outside- inwardly they're very similar. They'll both do what's necessary for the survival of the group.
