Starting Sunday against the Mets.

I think it is a desperate move by a desperate franchise.
I believe less than 10k tickets have been sold for opening day. They can't give away tickets. Miami is pissed and people have turned their back on the Fish. Attendance may just be about the worst ever seen in recent MLB history. Not since the same owner Loria fricked over the Expos.
Last pitcher to make a jump like this (A straight to MLB totally skipping AA and AAA) and succeed was almost 30 years ago - Dwight Gooden.
Chances are low he succeeds THIS YEAR. But the Fish are desperate and this kid has very very nasty stuff and is pretty much as can't miss as it gets for a pitching prospect.
Should be interesting to watch as long as it does or does not last.
ETA: And with his back story (twice escaping Cuba after being deported back to Cuba), if he succeeds against all odds making the jump, the Cuban community here will lose its shite and all will be forgiven.

Incredibly stupid.

With Eovaldi on the DL we don't have much of a choice do we?
I guess we could've gone with Hand or Turner, maybe Jennings, but...would they do any better? May as well give the kid a try.

No. It is probably the right call only because the Fish have no choice (otherwise it would never happen). Their rotation is easily the weakest in baseball this year. With the injuries, there are teams in AA and AAA with better starting rotations I believe. They HAVE to call up someone and Fernandez makes the most sense. He is their #1 prospect and top 3 in all of baseball. And he will help ticket sells. If he is successful Sunday against the Mets, he is going to be the story next week in baseball and attendance will triple, quadruple or better for his first home start.
I'm looking forward to seeing how he does personally.
