The Watchmen - so, somebody explain this brilliant plan to me (SPOILERS)

I just got finished watching the Watchmen (no, no pun intended). Help a brother out here.
Somebody explain how this plan by Veith make any sense at all in achieving any type of a lasting peace or a better world.
Best I could see is maybe a temporary improvement for a short time before human nature reverts to what it is. At a cost of a few million lives. And that's even if people think Dr. Manhattan is still out there watching them somehow.
Is it just that Veith was a imbecille deep down? And the rest of them as well for agreeing with him (with the exception of Rorschach of course). Is it Moore was just a big hippy? Something I'm missing.
Because I like the movie - it's well done and I like the tone of the movie (noir but not over the top like some movies). But it seems like they could have come up with a more compelling scheme for improving the world to make it a more ambiguous situation.

In the comic, he transports a giant alien octopus thing and blames it for the deaths.
It dies on transport.
It gives humanity a common enemy. That was his goal.
Didnt translate as well in the movie.

The comic made more sense because it was an alien attack that brings everyone worldwide together.
The Manhattan attack would only cause chaos and worldwide panic because he is omnipotent so people would in reality have no hope.
The movie sucked. Deal with it.
Plus the whole plan was flawed even in the comic book.
They tried to make up some malarkey that Manhattan had certain time windows he couldn't see into, but that was crap because he could be in all time periods at once so even if he couldn't foresee a certain plan he would certainly at some point in the future be able to see the plan thus all his different time line lives would know. They made Manhattan too powerful for the story to make any freaking sense.
In before I am annihilated by the over zealous blind to logic fans.
Oh. The trailer was better than the movie.

Watchmen is one of the top 2 or 3 comic book movies of the last 20 years...

Watchmen was made by a guy who had clearly had read the comics, loved them, and didn't understand them at all.

Its true, Watchmen was great. The problem with the movie ending is that humanity had no chance of defeating Manhattan even if they had all teamed together. Seems kinda pointless to even try.

How about attempting to answer the flaws?
Manhattan was omnipotent thus there would be no hope in defeating him. Thus unity would never happen.
Heck, the journal was flawed in the comic too because once again Mr. Omnipotent could easily see in the future that the journal with the plan got out, then his past self could destroy the journal.
Both the movie and the comic were flawed because they essentially made Manhattan a god like being.

Ummmm.... that was the point of the comic. He was God.

that was the point of the comic. He was God.
And once again, making HIM the enemy in the movie makes the whole unity aspect impossible to achieve.

Watch the director's cut. It is less sucky than the theatrical release.
Posted on 3/29/13 at 10:59 pm to TigerMyth36
Why would he stop it from being released? He doesn't really care about humanity anymore.

The journal is just a comical endtag. But Dr. Manhattan had left the galaxy at this point to become God somewhere else. But I don't think it matters either way. It's just an ironic twist at the end. Even if it does get released, who cares? It's a rag with the credibility of the Weekly World News. Likely, no one pays attention to the diary.
