I can see where you're coming from. Initially thought the "TressFX" was cheesy and gimmicky until actually playing Tomb Raider and seeing what it does.
PhysX just makes the world and environments feel "more alive" to me. Really helps out the experience if done right. What I do hate is that it is so god damn proprietary that you need CUDA cores or an Intel chip to run. (You can download a program from nVidia that allows your CPU to do some PhysX)
You do know you can use a GTX560 and higher to run as a PhysX card along side of your AMD card? I have personally never done it but a program does exist allowing you to do so.

Then you have to deal with 3rd party drivers. That's not something I felt like dealing with.
