With the 117th Pick in The Official TD 2013 NFL Mock Draft, the Chicago Bears select:
Denard Robinson, WR, Michigan
Is this a shocking pick? Yes. Is this too high? Maybe. But here's my line of thinking:
1) The Bears just hired Marc Trestman
Trestman is a shocking hire himself. He's got gobs of NFL experience but never as HC. He's regarded as QB guru and brought to Chicago to revive the stagnant offense and jump start Cutler's career.
2) The Bears are woeful on offense
They've miscast Devin Hester as a speed WR and it hasn't worked. Marshall is about as good as it comes working the middle and underneath, but not a deep threat. Jeffrey profiles similarly. They need someone to stretch the field. They signed an expensive LT to help up front and a solid TE to help there. But they still need more help.
3) Robinson comes with heavy upside
Robinson was a QB at Michigan, as we all know. But he's also one of the fastest players in this draft class. At the Senior Bowl he didn't perform well in early transition. By the combine he was already markedly better. He's a high character kid with great work ethic. He's a superb athlete. At this point, the Bears feel the athletic reward is worth the risk to add a potential dynamic weapon to their passing game.
