Were they the product of the Smoke Laval years? How much longer can Rick Jones hold on there?

I'm sure threatening to get rid of your athletics program wasn't good for recruiting.

Haven't adjusted well to the rule changes.

Well when they made their first CWS Skip was still coaching. I don't think Laval had anything to do with Tulane, they don't really recruit the same guys. Most of the LA kids on Tulane's '05 team were guys I don't think Lsu had any interest in.

well i should have said, the end of skip and the laval year. it was widely known that turtle thomas was doing the recruiting for Bertman at the tail end of his career. And he sucked at it for the most part.

They were going to be pretty good this year and then their entire pitching staff caught the injury bug.

1) Katrina
2) Higher education price inflation
3) New scholarship rules
4) New rules restricting transfers
5) An emphasis by other schools on baseball, increasing recruiting competition

Those are a few of the main issues that have negatively affected Tulane and (number 1 not withstanding) countless other private schools across the country. Namely, schools like Southern Cal, and the entirety of the West Coast Conference.

Seems to be a common thing with Rick Jones

it is my recollection that he was the scape goat almost as much as "fire javi" is today.

and i remember several of you all (LE) being the biggest smoke laval apologists on the rant.

Although those factors played a part, notice that private school TCU has gone from nothing to very good in baseball with their coach, a former Tulane assistant. Connect the dots.

I defended Smoke when he was taking teams to Omaha.

Ill still defend turtle. Dude was a great recruiter. He got a bad rep for the last recruiting class or 2. The word had gotten out about smoke at that point.

I'll say those things played a bigger part than losing Schloss. While he's a great coach, they did fine after he left.

Obviously Schlossnagle was part of what made Tulane successful. Jones never really got a comparable assistant after he left.

TCU also isn't as expensive to attend as Tulane is, or USC, or Pepperdine.

ETA: Also, losing Schlossnagle to TCU falls under the "other schools emphasizing baseball" category.
