re: Should homosexuality be a protected class?

So, you think it should be legal to fire people (or engage in other harmful discrimination) on the basis of gender, race, etc.?

yes. why not? jobs aren't rights

i don't agree with doing that, but it's not my property and i don't (and shouldn't) have control over it

What about not allowing two gays to marry by law? It's the same concept.

re: Should homosexuality be a protected class?

quote:

can we make straight right wing white american males part of a protected class?

Straight = sexual orientation = protected class (in some jurisdictions)
White = race = protected class
Male = gender = protected class
American = national origin = protected class

That's four classifications right there that would protect "straight right wing white american males" from unlawful discrimination. If someone gets fired from a job or denied service at a place of public accommodation for being straight, or white, or male, or American, he is protected by anti-discrimination laws.

You can't fire someone just because they are gay, can you?

That doesn't sound right

No protected classes.

All should be treated equally in the eyes of justice and government.

I was being facetious.

Equal protection of the law is a right. Should the law allow white-only buses or trains? Male-only restaurants? No-Jews-allowed real estate restrictive covenants?

Well, that's the whole idea behind protected classes. In theory it is the goverment forcing equal treatment on private citizens.

whoa

don't take the state regulating a behavior as an example that the behavior ignores its history

No

Next people will want protection because they are fat or nerds or ugly or dumb or whatever else makes them feel like people aren't treating them fairly.

re: Should homosexuality be a protected class?

quote:

Equal protection of the law is a right.

equal protection under the LAW is not the same as equal protection from private action

and our government has so skewed the concept of equal protection, it has created suspect classes that have more rights than those not in the suspect classes. how is that logically consistent?

quote:

Should the law allow white-only buses or trains?

public or private?

public? no
private? the state should have no say

quote:

Male-only restaurants?

why not?

why would a restaurant cut out half of the market i'll never understand, but if it has a plan to make up for it, then the owner should be allowed to test out this plan

quote:

No-Jews-allowed real estate restrictive covenants?

those are born from private agreement, no?

Can "stupid people" be part of a protected class? That should cover pretty much all Americans these days.

Not even close.

The state doesn't license where you drink from or where you ride on the bus.
