If you don't like the 38% return on your investment, sell your shares and buy Chik-Fil-A.

No.
He's saying he doesn't care if his personal non-business POV crushes share prices. He's willing to act in an antifiduciary way if it strikes his fancy. Hopefully his investors will take him to court.

The CEO told him if he didn't like the 38% return he got last year, he was free to sell his stock in the company (to THUNDEROUS applause at the shareholder's meeting I might add)

Why do you have such a problem with this?

It's well known that Starbucks is a progressive company and is very outfront about its support for gay rights.

How Ironic is that a company that has the statue of liberty in their logo is Anti- First Amendment

I usually go to Starbucks everyday. I've been thinking of kicking the coffee habit for awhile now. Tomorrow seems like a good day to start. Ironically, the Starbucks near my neighborhood is right next to the Chick-fil-A.

So ok for the CEO of chic fil a to make pro-traditional marriage comments but not for the CEO of Starbucks to make anti-traditional marriage comments?

They can both say what they want.

We don't know the context of the conversation or what happened.

The article said that he told a stockholder "You can pull your stock out, if you want."

How do we know the stockholder didn't raise an issue of gay marriage tolerance and expressed his disapproval? To which the reply was, "If you don't like my policies or our corporate stand is on marriage, then you can pull your stock out and invest elsewhere."

The OP was pretty sketchy on details and context so who knows what was said and how.

That's a direct contrast to the publicity of Cathy's comments.

If it comes out that the comments were directly comparable, then you're free to boycott or whatever the other side did vs. chik fil a. Well, actually, there's nothing stopping you from doing that now.

But based on the facts as we know them, a direct comparison doesn't make much sense.

And if this offends someone, then that someone was probably looking to be offended.

I'm just not that PC, I guess.

Here is the actual quote

"If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38% you got last year, it’s a free country. You can sell your shares in Starbucks and buy shares in another company. Thank you very much."

Seems like he understand it quite well.

He has the right to voice his opinion.

I have the right to accept his request. My wife has been buying Starbucks for quite some time.

Not any more. Guess we'll have to find a new brand for her Keurig.

Actually no.

Dan Cathy is not CEO.
Dan Cathy was not addressing shareholders.
Dan Cathy did not dismiss investor concerns about previous company actions which dropped share prices
And .
Dan Cathy did not invite a majority of shareholders to consider liquidation of their stock due to personal beliefs.

A CEO cannot do those things and fulfill his duty.

The CEO didn't say if you are anti gay marriage sell you stock. he said if you feel like you can get a better return you can always go sell your stock.

There is a video of the exchange. It's nothing like the Revelator or that hack site that he linked says.

He told the shareholder that the company was committed to embracing diversity. He said, "It is not an economic decision."

He'd better hope Starbucks shares don't drop.
