The argument was settled in two ways: first, McNeese's son-in-law, L.L. Squires, wrote in his biography of McNeese that his nickname was "Mack." Secondly, this author visited descendants living in Mississippi, North Carolina, and Virginia and was told that the correct pronunciation is, indeed, "Mack" Neese.
