Paypal is not supposed to be used for firearms. If you are caught using to buy firearms and get ripped off they won't help you.
If you are planning to send a certified check or money order you need to send payment either delivery confirmation or have them sign for it at the post office to have proof it was received.
It also is very important to do your homework: How is the seller's feedback? Can you find the seller on google or whitepages.com using their contact information? Are you being told to send the money to a P.O. Box? Do other people who bought from the seller have very low feedback? If so they could be alters. Look for red flags.
ETA: Most douchebag sellers on there now charge a 3% fee to use credit cards. I think it is a shite move, but probably worth it to have some peace of mind.
