Why is the state of Mississippi so bad athletically?

I didn't put this on the SEC rant because it would be a flame fest.
They have everything the rest of the South has with a large black population and a huge sports culture.. but they never win anything. Ole Miss and Mississippi State have 0 national championships, although Ole Miss football will disagree.. but they have 0 legit ones.
You think they'd at least be able to be good at track and field.

Louisiana is neck and neck with Mississippi in term of state shittiness but LSU has 42 more national titles.

Mississippi is the poorest state in country and many potential athletes can never get trained into a top athlete in a sport.
Mississippi has three major universities that kind of split the talent. LSU, Arkansas and Tennessee and larger populated states don't have that problem.
Mississippi is the dumbest state in the country and college is not appealing to a large constituency.

could it have anything to do with population? pulling that one out of my arse, i know, but that could have something to do with it. fewer people in state to choose from and people out of state have better athletic options at LSU or Bama nearby in the SEC

1. LA has one major athletic program
MS has 3 major athletic programs with about half the population
2. Many if not most of the best black athletes want to leave the state
Ole Miss was once a great CFB power. But the rise of Alabama/Bear Bryant and the end of segregation (see #2) made a 1-2 punch it will probably never recover from completely.
If Ole Miss and State were somehow combined into the MS equivalent of LSU it would help

Are you counting Southern Miss? Or am I too tired and missing an obvious one.
If so you should count both Tulane and at least Tech in LA. If not both ULL and ULM.

Half their elite talent can't get in because of academics.

yeah, and overall their best talent isn't going to MSU or Ole Miss (I wouldn't say the states best athletes are Archie Manning or Deuce McAllister either).
I'm no fan of Miss, but I would think if there was a way to get all their best talent to pick one school (either Moo State or Ole Miss) they'd have a few rings to show for it. They don't have that luxury like LSU or Arky. And they don't have that wide range of talent like the state of Florida either.
ETA: just imagine if Walter P, Jerry Rice or Marcus Dupree would have chose one of the big 2 in their respective years. Just as a microcosm and how much better those teams would have been

I've never understood that. Ole Miss requires half a brain and a North Face jacket

The NCAA recognizes one championship in football. So there's that.
The top instate talent hasn't been going out of state for a few years now. It just hasn't been developed by a competent coach. I can't speak for State but for decades ole miss was run by the GOB network. When we finally got rid of Boone unsurprisingly good things started to happen.

Seems pretty simple considering you are dividing the poorest and 2nd smallest state in the south in half with two SEC programs. Louisiana isn't much better but there's only one SEC or major program.

Who wants to spend four years in Starkville?
Plus OM and MSU have a reputation for being second tier programs. That makes it easy for LSU, Bama, Tennessee (pre-Lame Kiffin), UGA, Texas, TAMU, etc. to raid Mississippi for talent. It's a vicious cycle.
