From what I heard, ESPN was actively pushing other conferences to raid the former Big East after they refused to take the deal that had been offered to them.

This is true, and another reason ESPN sucks.

I still cant believe they went with ESPN over NBC Sports.

NBC Sports would have tried to grow their brand with a nice push while with ESPN they are goin to get stuck on ESPNU and ESPN3 more often than not.

I believe that ESPN had the right to match the offer from NBC

I don't think the pre-realignment conference would have stayed together even if they had accepted the deal. The football schools were pissed with the bball schools. That being said with the exception of cincy, uconn, and usf all the american 12 schools are better off than they were before and a heck of a lot better off than staying in the new CUSA.

The seven-year deal included a stipulation that it could be terminated if the league lost two more schools, sources said. ESPN could only match NBC Sports Network's deal and not change the language of the contract, sources said.

NBC Sports Network's contract divided the league into Group A (Connecticut, Cincinnati, Houston and Temple) and Group B (the remaining members), sources said.

The media rights deal can be terminated if either two Group A schools leave or one Group A and one Group B school leave. If two Group B schools leave, the contract will be renegotiated, sources said.

The Big East and ESPN held a teleconference Tuesday to announce the media rights deal but did not specially address the termination clause

I mean it at least gave them the chance to put up a deal that would match money wise.

Apparently they were happy enough with ESPN that all the school presidents voted for it.

But it was my understanding they could still reject both offers and start over.

I could be wrong.

I'm just as surprised NBC low-balled them making it east for ESPN to match.

this part is interesting as it seems to indicate the Group A schools are the ones with the most value to the conference.

But they accepted NBC's offer, then ESPN matched it.

I understand that but they still had to vote to accept ESPN matching.

I read that as they could have rejected it once ESPN matched and started the whole process over again.

Like I said, I could be reading it totally wrong.

I am more surprised that NBC didn't give them an offer that was too expensive for ESPN to match.

It seems like it would have made sense for them to give the new BE more than it was really worth to try and grow its value over the long haul.
