interested in the response on the .223 as well. My son is nagging me to let him shoot a deer next year with my AR

I am a big fan of lighter grain bullets that shoot very fast. But having said that I would not use anything below 100gr high quality bullet shooting under 2700 fps. The reason is if you hit a shoulder with that light grain bullet it may not penetrate. This is the main reason why I stopped letting my kids shoot my 22-250.
Yeah in my younger days I have killed deer with a 22lr and even No6 squirrel shot but I would not recommend them as every day hunting rounds.

quote:Medium and smaller deer at shorter ranges, standard ball/fmj works fine. Aim for fleshy area and 9 times out of 10 the bullet will yaw after entry and make a nasty exit wound.
.223
how were your results? i dont know anyone that has used this. what ammo? grain?
Shooting into the chest cavity with fmj = chance of lost deer.
Since becoming a civilian again, stuck with short range head/base of head shots with whatever ammo I had on hand (brushy wooded environment)
My eyes aren't as good as they used to be, so I'm getting away from .223 when I get a chance to do some experimenting.
