Comp picks will be announced today.

We lost Nicks, but replaced him with Grubbs. We also lost Porter but didn't replace him with a free agent.

The whole thing confuses me.

Pretty much every person that calculates these in advance says we aren't.

Last year:

quote:

"A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2012 NFL Draft have been awarded to 15 teams, the NFL announced today.

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

...

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32
compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 221 choices in the seven rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft.."

NFL refers to an "formula", but in all honesty it's a matter of judgment. We all know how good the NFL's judgment is, now don't we?

The basic gist of it is teams are rewarded compensatory picks in the draft after the season they lose a player to free agency. The level of that pick depends on several factors, including salary, playing time and postseason honors of the player leaving, and the value of any player the team signs in free agency.

Allegedly only the NFL knows the forumla, but there are a few people out there that predict them completely accurately, year after year. There was a guy that posted on KFFL that alleged he worked for the NFL and new the formula...and he got them right 99.99% of the time.

If it was just this, then the Saints might have a chance at something. However.....

playing time

This blows it out of the water with both Nicks and Porter getting injured and Grubbs and Lofton playing the entire season.

One of the last remaining ways the NFL can beat parity by helping out select teams.
