how good do you have to be to do this?

I think that I would enjoy it as much as a round of golf or as much as any other competitive sport.

I am sure that there are a variety of levels but what is the equivalent of a scratch golfer in a (lets say) .22 competitive shooting event?

10 shots at 50 feet inside of a dime
10 shots at 50 feet inside of a nickle
10 shots at 50 feet inside of a quarter
10 shots at 50 feet inside of a half dollar piece

I know it is a tough comparison between scratch golf and shooting but to those that have shot in competition, what would you guess that you would have to shoot and be seen as a "pretty damn good shooter?

I don't do it. Had a buddy who did though. He was pretty good when he started, but no more so than I think I was. He honed as he went along. You learn as you go. When he stopped, he had won a rifle or two. He travelled up to NC and some other states for some matches when he was doing it. If you are interested, just start doing it. You learn as you go and meet good people and make good contacts. He shot .308 bolt action.

I've shot skeet a few time competitively. Some of those guys are serious and some are there fricking off.

If you want to win with any consistency you have to be extremely good. Everywhere you go, some guy who is pretty good to begin with is going to be having a great day. It's just like any other individual competition.

It's tons of fun though.

its killing me to know what a "winning" paper looks like? Ive tried researching it but apparently I suck at the interwebz because I cant seem to find anything with any good discrition.

Seems like clubs would post pics and say "this is our 50 meter 30-06 winner on 3-17-2013" or something like that....If they would, I could get an idea of what "wins"..... but I have yet to find something like that online...

Man I wouldn't worry that much about winning at first. Just sign up and see if you like it.

I never won a shooting competition but I've had a good time at almost every one.

I had one BAD one. Couldn't hit anything. That wasnt fun

I much prefer competitions like IDPA and IPSC where you're shooting on the move. Those to me are much more practical for real-world shooting and self defense.
