The gun could have slam fired from dropping the slide. One of the safeties on the gun, there are several, could have failed. In this instance the OP pulled the trigger with the grip safety depressed and disengaged the safety on the trigger...
Boneheaded? Absolutely, but to think that he needs a lecture at this point is kind of like buying the milking pail after you have slaughtered the cow...
His son, who incidentally has fired more rounds than everyone on this board combined, will give him more grief about this than anyone on this board ever will...

I wasn't calling you out. I was backing you up.
He does need a lecture. It was an idiotic move that makes us all look bad. This is a very important time to represent the gun owning community well.
