Harper, Bunkley, Hawthorne, (Will and Vilma were the case, still is to an extent) Malcom making decent money now, Jabari, Jordan was a 1st round pick value to the D, They were paying Ellis last year on the books... To sit here with a theory that we've ignored D and haven't done enough bc we're paying Drew is dumb.

This. Grubbs is the only big-time contract along the OL. We've done very well in the draft at drafting needs there. However, we have made some horrible defensive moves in the draft: Sullivan, Ellis, etc. At least the rookie contracts will not be as ridiculous as before, which will allow teams to spend a little more on proven veterans, but, then again, you could end up with another David.

It doesn't matter what we're paying them, they are the worst EVER. EVER. Please answer my original question. Does it matter who the backup is?

A vet who is worth a damn will cost you in the $2 mil range, and that's something this team (should not) do, given our other needs and cap situation. IMO, the season is fricked if #9 is out for a period of time, so might as well go the cheap and developmental route by drafting a QB mid to late round...or even undrafted, like we did with Chase in the first place.

didn't see any responses to McCown. He lasted all through camp last year. I don't remember him looking embarrassing. The dirty birds snatched him up immediately as ryan's primary backup. It was a horrendous team and he was injured early but he did win the opening day starter job in Jax in 2011. Near vet minimum pay if not that. He is kinda goofy looking tho How bout 4th Rd or later QBs? Mentioned so far- Matt Scott Sean Renfree Aaron Murray Dysert Tyler Bray Anybody know Nathan Stanley who played at Southeastern? He's on a lotta big boards. Transferred from Ole Miss, anyone know why he left? Very raw but some clear tools and build to work with.

we're talking backup, not replacement. A developmental pick can be turned into a valuable commodity. Look at the start of the thread.

found THIS deep scouting report on Renfree. Renfree’s pocket presence is an ingrained part of his game. He slides away from pressure while maintaining good throwing form -- Ryan Tannehill at Texas A&M is one example of a player who showed this -– and he possesses a good internal clock to get rid of the football. Combine this with the other NFL-caliber pocket skills I've discussed and Renfree has the makings of a potential starter. One that has a shorter developmental time than many may realize. Is he the steal of the draft? Who knows, there's a lot about transitioning to the NFL that goes beyond skill: injury, emotional-psychological transition, money, team politics, etc. But at a position personnel executives consider the most important when building a team, Renfree is at least a solid candidate for that potential honor.

Not many names thrown out. So whaddya think on these free agents- Derek Anderson, 30, 53/55 lifetime TD/INT, has started 43 games Jason Campbell, 31, here's how the career of a #25 overall disappointment goes- play it out with team that drafts you (Wash), another desperate team gives you a shot (Oak), you are resigned to being a backup (Caro). Is experienced, not a terrible bum Kellen Clemens, 30, lifetime 51% comp, 7/13 TD/INT, Might be Arena League time Rex Grossman, Sexy Rexy will be 33 this season. Best thing I can find is he is 25-22 as a starter lifetime Brian Hoyer, 28, there's buzz that a lot of teams like this guy even though he's only started 1 game and thrown 57 passes in 4 seasons Matt Leinart, 30, surprising to not hear more about how gigantic of a flop he was for a #10 overall. Trying to hang on as a backup. TD/INT ratio is usually most incriminating for failure. His is 15/21 Stephen McGee, 28, thought this guy had some skills, he still hasn't flamed out from failure at least, not bad stats for the 82 passes he has thrown Brady Quinn, 29, hanging on, started 8 games for KC in 2012, 1-7 record. Lifetime 12/17 TD/INT Tyler Thigpen, 29, pretty typical career backup IMO, not a complete bum Maybe Luke McCown back ain't so bad after going through those names

forgot about that one Wonder if he could do any NT? Like how a lotta fast guys go to the wider CFL field Jabarkus needs to go to a football league with 150yd long fields. Just throw it baby! Kinda emblematic of the aging decline of Al Davis and the Raiders.

Only matters when the QB goes down. I would expect a vet as our 2nd at a VERY reasonable price then a very late round draft pic or UDFA to put on practice squad. And you hope CSP picks a winner there.

This guy would be my pick. I like backups with a lot of experience. If Brees goes down, you're screwed anyway, but an experienced guy may hold the team together a little better. With that said, rookie QBs the last few years have been hitting the field and making a name for themselves. Is there a Russell Wilson or Kaepernick in this draft? Most probably not, but T. Wilson and Bray are interesting candidates.
