What are some of the programs, utilities, etc. that you consider essential? Doesn't have to do with gaming per se, but just running your computer on a daily basis. Freeware is always good, but anything goes.

Music
Foobar2000 - for general playing
Musicbee - library management, though I just downloaded it

Security
Got rid of Norton 360 as it was a memory hog.
Avast Free Anti-virus
Comodo Firewall
Malwarebytes Free edition for periodic scans
Auslogics Disk Defrag
SlimCleaner - used to use CCleaner, but ultimately switched
SlimDrivers - Driver update, used occasionally

Video
VLC Player
MakeMKV
ConvertXtoDVD

Audio
MP3 Album Maker - Good for combining tracks into a single MP3, for podcasts mainly

Browsers
Chrome - No.1
Firefox - No.2
Might include extensions later

General Programs
Photoshop
Utorrent
Evernote - Journal, notes, to-do lists, etc
Internet Download Manager
Steam & Origin
Foxit Reader instead of Adobe
Gmail Backup or Thunderbird - looking for alternative though
FitDayPC - Great tool for tracking health, be it weight, lifts, body measurements, caloric intake with macro breakdown...

Media
PS3 Media Server

Storage
Dropbox - Docs and emails
Amazon Cloud - Music files
Google Cloud - Photographs, some movies

Have more, but that should be sufficient to get this ball rolling. Feel free to post useful stuff, recommendations, etc.

ETA Stuff:
VirtualCloneDrive

I use a lot of what the OP suggested, but I'm interested in hearing more and the why of it. I'm always down to make things more efficient. Case in point, VLC and divx are my principal video software and it's all I think I need; why use something else? That's not dismissive, it's an invitation for you to sell me on something else

I used to use CCleaner but ran simultaneous tests quite a few times and kept finding that SlimCleaner found more junk files to get rid of than CCleaner.

MakeMKV is used to rip DVDs or Blu-rays into MKV files. ConvertXtoDVD will burn pretty much anything into a DVD.

Vipre anti-virus is the best for your money IMO. Runs in the background and uses next to no memory. I've been in impressed by it.

As far as essential programs, the first thing I downloaded after my drivers and antivirus was League of Legends. Then programs like Skype, Spotify, TeamSpeak, Project64, Dolphin 3.0, Firefox, WinRar, uTorrent, Origin, and iTunes.

ETA: Granted most of these aren't essential to run your computer, but for me to use my computer the way I do, they are.

Webroot does a good job of using very little of your system.

there is ZERO need to pay for antivirus on a stand alone computer.

I'm an Arkansas fan. We all have money to burn.

But seriously, it's like $30 for a two year coverage. It's not like paying for Norton.
