I know I will take heat for this but I have never watched a single one of the bond movies. with all the praise I've been hearing about skyfall I've become interested in watching them. my question is do they need to be watched in a certain order? does it start a new arc with each new bond actor or is each movie pretty much a stand alone to where order doesn't matter? I want to begin watching them just don't know where to start.

I'm curious as well because I'm in the same boat as you. As a follow up question, what would you (the board) rank as your top 4 or 5 movies? Seems like those would be a good starting point for a beginner.

Yes and No. Casino Royal (2006) rebooted the series. You can watch the newest 3 without missing much from the previous 40 years of Bond.

All the other ones have references to previous movies, but you won't be lost if you don't watch them in order.

Aside from the first few Connery Bonds (Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger), I don't think they need to be watched in a specific order.

Casino Royale would probably be a good place to start for someone who is just beginning the series.

isn't that the first one? I would like to eventually start there but i'm kind of interested in catching skyfall and want to begin the arc that will lead me there.

I'd say there's more issues of character or rather actor continuity than story arc with Bond. You don't have to watch them all, but I'd start with the Sean Connery Bond movies. No matter who is Bond, they all follow the same formula though:

1 Super wealthy megalomaniac with ties to the bad guys of the day tries to take over/destroy the world.
2 James Bond is sent to infiltrate the organization and destroy it from within.
3 James Bond seduces and bangs bad guy's girlfriend, who usually has a name written by a hormone addled 13 year old like Pussy Galore.
4 James Bond gets captured by the bad guy, usually at the hands of an interesting henchman.
5 James Bond escapes, usually with a cool spy gadget, kills/defeats the henchman and then bangs bad guys girlfriend again.
6 James Bond foils the bad guy's plan and then the movies often close with him banging the bad guys girlfriend yet again if she survived.

The first movie, Dr. No is a good place to start. Thunderball was always one of my favorites growing up, I just always like the underwater fight scenes for some reason.

My dad was a big Bond fan and he would record them sometimes if they came on TV. There is one scene in one of the movies where there's a helicopter chase scene, bond in the lead helicopter and bad guys behind him. Anyone have any idea which movie this was?

There are a lot of Bond universe references you might not get if this is your first one. They're minor and you'd still enjoy the movie, but you'd enjoy it more if you knew what they were referring to. Once you knock a few Connery classics out of the way you should have enough of a foundation for Skyfall though.

They all for the most part are stand alone. Some relationships between M, Q, and Moneypenny can travel between films, but main plots are pretty much independent. That said, the Daniel Craig Bonds should probably be watched in order. Other than him, I can't think of too many instances of past references in plot lines.

I watched them all out of order. I'd recommend doing that as you won't get burnt out on a certain Bond. I'd also recommend watching the first of each Bond (ie. Dr. No, The Living Daylights, Casino Royale) when introducing yourself to a new Bond.

You can by all means watch them chronologically. It might give you a better sense of how the series and each Bond has developed as well. It really doesn't matter. If you get tired of a specific Bond, just jump to another one and come back to that Bond at a later date.

Both Dr. No and Casino Royale are good starting places.

Same here.

And weirdly, I have no desire to. I have friends who LOVE the Bond movies, and I'd never say shite like "I hate Bond movies" or "those movies are stupid" because I wouldn't know. I've just never really wanted to see any of them.

Aside from maybe Dr. No when I was a kid, I'm not sure I've ever watched a Bond film all the way through.

I've always felt like sort of a heretic for not being able to get into Bond.

I watched You Only Live Twice for the first time the other day. I was amazed at how bad the special effects were. I am sure they were exceptional for its time though. i don't think it matters what sequence you watch them in.

Don't start with Die Another Day or you'll mistakenly think the whole series is a joke

Connery had Bond fatigue after You Only Live Twice. They got a new actor (Lazenby) to replace him, but OHMSS was a commercial letdown even if in retrospect it's considered one of the finest Bond films. After that, they begged Connery to come back for Diamonds are Forever (which sucked arse, btw).

He quit but then came back because they gave him a buttload of money.

quote:

Although Eon secured the services of John Gavin to play the role of Bond, United Artists' chief David Picker was unhappy with this decision and instructed associate producer Stanley Sopel to broker a deal with Sean Connery which saw the actor being paid the fee of $1.25 million ($9 million in 2013 dollars)[4] and 12.5% of the gross.[104][107] Connery's salary took a significant part of the $7.2 million budget.[79]

One of the best in my opinion. I believe Connery decided to retire, but then something happened with Lazenby that the producers didn't want him back or he didn't want to do it again. Not sure the history behind it. So they got Connery back. Connery also did his own Bond apart from the main series. This one is called "Never Say Never Again"
