Is there something inherent in my genes that makes me like Brian Wilson, or was I conditioned to like his music by what I heard growing up?

I seriously doubt musical taste is passed down genealogically.

I don't think it has anything to do with a predisposition at all, and everything to do with culture. As a musician myself, I'm convinced that we are influenced by everything that we hear from our favorite music to the melody your doorbell chime plays. And, what we hear is predominantly driven by culture.

That's why Indian music sounds like Indian music, African like African etc. After all you don't see many hair metal bands out of Zimbabwe do you?

To me what makes someone a real musician is the ability to take the way they have been cultured and the music that entails, blend that with other influences, and spit out their own take on the whole thing.
