why are people not allowed to advertise firearms for sale on free sites such as Craigslist or other classified sites ?

Its Ebay's policy - They own CL and Paypal. Paypal will freeze your account (meaning you cant get any of your money in the account) if they suspect you of using it to buy or sell a firearm.

I was under the impression that it was because the sites themselves did not want the liability of having guns sold on their websites.

What liability would the website have by allowing people to advertise firearms? Liability should fall on the individuals who do not follow the law for the sale?
