I am not knocking Vanguard and I agree that they are relatively simple. That being said, the VAST majority of people lack the education that should be a part of any prudent investment strategy.

If you don't know what you are doing, Vanguard will do no better for you than any of the other big boys. I would walk into a financial advisor's office and try to educate myself on investing before I stash all of my money in a low-cost index fund. Maybe that ends up being the best option for me, but until I talk to someone (multiple people in my experience) I will not know what else is available.
