Yeah I don't know about the boot knife.
For tactical folders Emerson's are up there, along with some of the beefed up Spyderco and Benchmade offerings. Zero Tolerance is comparable to Emerson as a hard use line of knives (owned by Kershaw I think). Al Mar makes some sturdy knives in the SERE line too.
But, apparently in line with your thinking, no folder is ever going to be a genuine hard use knife. My choice for pretty much every application in a fixed blade is the Esee 4. Great warranty and will take serious abuse.

I honestly do no think any of those manufacturers can come close to Emerson as far as being a primarily defense knife. I also stick with my suggestion as using a neck knife for backup
