Can someone explain to me why it needs to be a sphere? I have ice trays and one of them makes a pretty good size rectangular cube that I use for liquor.

I don't know that the shape is the important part as much as the size. Less surface area means slower melting. That means the drink won't get as watered down. More smaller cubes have more surface area than one large cube.
