Aside from maybe Luke, R2D2, and C-3PO, just forget the other Star Wars characters. Its an immersive enough universe that you can do a ton with. Its like making all the Star Trek films spin-offs of other characters.

Naboo as a planet is fine, its just how over the top Lucas wanted to make it for the love story. It's just so incredibly unsubtle I couldn't believe it. Padme's dominatrix outfit may be the most unsubtle and inappropriate thing I've seen put to sci fi universe. Seriously, you're trying to not tempt him with sex in something that has a dog collar attached to it? If there's ever been a dress that says "frick me right now, god damn it!", this is it.
