The biggest idiot was without question Maclean Stevenson. His career never recovered.
How many great roles did he expect to get in one lifetime? He was no leading man -- which may have been part of the problem. He auditioned for the role of Hawkeye, and supposedly was always bitter he didn't get it.
MS leaving MASH was even more disastrous since Henry Blake was one of my favorite supporting TV characters of all time, and an integral part of the show. His leaving damaged it permanently, and began a very long downhill slide -- perhaps the biggest in TV history.

Henry Blake was my favorite supporting TV characters too. Though I could tolerate Colonel Potter I utterly despised BJ. So Wayne Rogers was a big blow too. Plus, the reason the show started going downhill imho was because Wayne Rogers left along with McClean Stevenson. Trapper John and Hawkeye were supposed to be equals in the beginning of MASH. Alan Alda literally stole the show and once Wayne Rogers and McClean Stevenson left Alda was without a doubt the ruler of the show. He gradually gained more and more control which caused the show to decline because his vision was inferior to the creators.

It changed the whole dynamic of MASH when he left.I guess "Hello Larry" was too good to pass up.
eta: Didn't Lamont leave Sanford and Son and then it became The Sanford Arms?
Freddie Prinze Chico and the Man.
