critics were seen as valuable when they (1) had more information/knowledge of movies than us and (2) we believed they had superior judgment/expertise.

the internet has destroyed a lot of the mythos of expertise in general

once those lucky few gained the role of "expert" previously, they could just mail it in at that point. now their reviews will not be forgiven or forgotten and they have to keep it up or adapt (like armand williams)
