I just watched this on Netflix. Kevin Spacey was great. The suspense was great.
I think the ending was a little bit open for interpretation.
...curious as to the movie board's thoughts on the movie and the ending.
****SPOILERS BELOW****
at the end, Frank Whaley's character kills the girlfriend instead of Kevin Spacey's character. why?

IIRC Spacey was goading Waley into seeing if he had
"what it took" to be a producer. He used the fact that the chick fricked everyone to move up the ranks was also sway him that she betrayed him.
Its the notion of what are you prepared to do to be a success in Hollywood. At that point killing the girl pinning the torture on her was a better career option.

I expected this movie to be like "Horrible Bosses" or something but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Great performances by Spacey and Whaley and impressive writing.
As Dr. 3 mentioned (spoilers), Guy kills his girlfriend instead of his abusive boss to further his career in the film industry. Buddy's methods in the movie were completely sadistic but he was using them as a way to toughen Guy up for this line of work. Basically, up to that point in the film Guy's faced with a dilemma: he can either kill Buddy and gain satisfaction from that but his career will be over, or he kills his own girl and pin the murder on her (and gets promoted to her job).

ya, this seems like what most people are saying....but why would Spacey help him get away with it? Seems strange that Spacey wouldn't just turn him in after the fact.

that's interesting....i didn't really get the impression that buddy had any benevolent intentions. just seemed like he was being a dick.

I see how Spacey out of the way could be bad for his career. Without Spacey, his "in" to the business would be gone. But why would Spacey go along with the kid's choice to this dilemma.

He was definitely being a dick, probably the douchiest boss I've ever seen in a movie

There were multiple times throughout the movie where Guy could have just given up and resigned. Buddy calls him out on it near the end of the movie and that's where Guy realizes that he'll have to throw his dignity out the window to move ahead.

so Buddy's cool with just forgiving the torture? What does he get out of the situation?
...does he just like the kid? sees himself in him? that's enough to forgive everything? he likes him more after he sees what he's willing to do?
seems like any of those possible positive feelings would go out the window after Whaley takes him hostage, beats him up, paper cuts his tongue, and fires a gun in his house.
is Buddy that twisted of a person? wish they had explained a reason for Buddy to go along with the cover-up.
loved the movie....just continuing the convo for whoever is interested.
