I went to the next area and killed that armored hog, now I'm stuck. If I go up the stairs, that knight fricks me up bad.

Look to the right and you should see a long bridge. Go there and when you hear tapping you will be close to a bonfire and a blacksmith. Thats a good safe zone. Avoid the big black knight until you get to that bonfire.
