Let me ask you this Ace, do you think the reboot is worse than "Star Trek Generations"?
Yes. For a lot of reasons. Mainly because it's not really Star Trek, can never really be Star Trek. Maybe they'll fix it with subsequent chapters, but I really doubt it. I expect many more well thought out action sequences, various and sundry combinations of phaser battles, melee combat, and snarky (particularly from Kirk) quips... and lens flares.
What I do not expect is legitmate, well thought out problem solving, dramatic tension, a moment where we can all learn something and feel better for the experience. The characters that care about each other, take care of each other, and so forth. That's what I was looking for. Where the characters were developed at all, they were specifically taken away from the strengths they had. Only the weaknesses, foibles and flaws were emphasized. Where there strengths were referenced at all seemed very contrived and deus ex machina in operation.
Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see it in the first film. It was unrecognizable as Star Trek, at least as I understand it. It wasn't what I was looking for and they're going to make 2 to 5 more of them.
I'm sad, but I'll move on.
