The big box store version of JD is made by American Yard Products, so its the same thing as a Big box Husqvarna, or a craftsman.
The Cub Cadet is MTD, same as toro, white, troy built, Yard Man and a ton of other "house brands"
Basically its all the same quality, just make sure you get a quality engine (Kohler, Kawisaki are best two IMO) and then google a specific model to see if there are any know issues with the transmission, deck, or rear end.
