Hard to have any sympathy for either side in this debacle.
The player didn't exactly look like he was being shut out of minutes. If he had over 490 minutes and the younger guy had like 540 (and one kid with 200 something) that is a whole lot different than saying he was just riding the pine. Plus, the guy didn't really come across that well in the quotes attributed to him.
On the other hand, a lot of coaches at the youth and even high school level are pretty clueless when it comes to actually managing, motivating and getting the most out of all of their players. This coach/coaching staff seems to have just let the team get away from him.
With a little foresight and some basic communication skills, It's not that difficult to formulate, explain and implement a coherent playing time/substitution plan which, while it might not make everyone ecstatic can maintain the morale and spirit of a team.
Sounds like a fail/fail to me.
