I generally think "He's the GM he knows better than you" is a cop out answer, but in this case I think it applies. I just don't think Demps would have matched if he felt that Gordon's cap space was a more valuable asset than Gordon. The injuries already made people question resigning Gordon and the fan base turned on Gordon completely after the Heart in Phoenix comments, so Dell had the perfect opportunity to walk away from Gordon and he didn't.
