So what are the best ways to level up in the beginning stages? I'm up to a Level 9 but can't really build anything new...only upgrade existing items. Should I just continue to attack other players?

Also, after you've been attacked and you have a shield, do any of you bother to wait until the shield is expired before attacking? It doesn't seem to me like it makes that much of a difference at this point for me. My troops can retrain fairly quickly and buildings also regenerate to full strength in a short amount of time. I'm thinking I just need to start blitzing other players as much as possible right now.

Not really. If it works out that I have a shield and I happen to be upgrading a bunch of defenses (defenses cannot attack while they are being repaired) or if I'm going to bed I will wait the shield out.

It gets to a point where you are forced to raid consistently if you want to upgrade to the higher levels. Thus waiting for the shield can hinder your progress.

Everyone has different strategies....
I believe in leveling up storages/makers because at early levels you can steal a good bit and need a place to store it. Once you get to the 500-750k storages I can focus solely on walls/other defense.

Now I am not saying totally neglect your defense but you don't need to max it out while only being able to hold 50k in storage either. Finding a balance is key, and I try to keep storages 1 level ahead of what I will need for my defense.

So if I have a level 2 cannon I will have at least a level 4 storage, then I can upgrade my cannon to 3 and then storage again. Just to give you an idea.

wait till shield is almost done, usually less than 30 minutes left so I can milk my storages and give my builders more time. I also try and time my builders and shield. So if something takes 12 hours I will go attack a few times get my gold then start building and log off. So when I get back on in 11 hours or so I have a new builder and a new toy/defense.
