If they want to promote a healthier version of football I suggest weight ranges. If you son weighs 30 lbs less than other kids his age, get his arse over to the track or to the wrestling mat. If your kid weighs 30 lbs more than the average kid his age, he's probably going to be obese and need to work on a healthier lifestyle. Obviously there are outliers, but those kids can play up in age if necessary.

I totally disagree with Rockford I don't know when he played football but my son started when he was 6 . He attended a catholic high school and started school as an 8th grader .the kids who played tackle ball for years like my son had a huge advantage and most of them including my son dominated the starting positions ! My son also learned many valuable lessons from early play of team sports. Rockford your wrong sorry!

Last time I checked playing sports is part of a healthy lifestyle.
