I am suprised this answer did not appear until page 3. Early career, it is a great profession, but as you move up through the ranks, you spend far more time behind a desk and attending meetings than you do in the woods.

I've got biologist friends and they are living the life. It's a great gig if you can get in doing what you want to do. I know one guy who collars bear. Been attached three times, survived a plane crash, a helicopter crash and still loves it...

If I could get paid to help make the outdoors better I'm all for it . There's nothing I would rather do than be on the water or in the woods most all the time . Dream job . Instead I guess I'll wake up in the morning go watch some computer screens and turn some wrenches

It's a pretty good option. I spent some time yesterday talking with a biologist who studies the mexican race of Spotted Owls in the mountains of New Mexico and Arizona. When he hikes up to where they nest he carries mice in PVC tubes. He then watches where they fly with the mice to find the nests and see if they have young. After a while they really don't mind him being around and said they get all excited when they see the PVC tubes. The downside is he spends most of his time teaching classes. I get the impression that it's difficult to find work as a pure researcher.
