You have no idea how happy I'd be I owned 2000 acres free and clear, and it was just me, my dad, and brother doing all of the work.

2 of my wife's uncles were foresters and for the same reason eventually went into the family business instead. It a real estate company that deals with large quantities of land so their degree wasn't a total waste.

I gotta say that I really think I'd rather a good friend own it. It's nice to just do the work without worrying about the money part of the operation

I have to admit, this winter I started working in the office a little more for the farm I work for and I'm surprised that I enjoy it. I guess I like the challenge of figuring out how much we spend per acre on each crop... So, if I ever get something of my own that I need some help with, I'll call you. Moving to the Delta may be a turn off, but we do have some huge deer with nothing to do in December and January.

ONLY way to make decent money in forestry is to buy and sell land/timber yourself. I had $4k/yr left over after bills were paid. Had to buy groceries, fuel, strippers, boose, etc and that ate every single bit of my fundage up. Can't save up money if you don't make enough to save.

My boss married into a large financial backer, so he got everything started that way. Ended up becoming the biggest hardwood timber supplier in the Southeast. I'm not about bumming money off of people though so it wasn't happening.

The guys I worked with had been registered foresters for at least 15yrs and lived in trailers.

I don't think I'd enjoy that a whole lot. It's nice to work outside the whole day and not see a single person.

I had kind of a rare job. It was a one man operation and I got to be the one man. That shite was awesome.

I am suprised this answer did not appear until page 3. Early career, it is a great profession, but as you move up through the ranks, you spend far more time behind a desk and attending meetings than you do in the woods.

Hunting guide for deer and duck. My uncle is a duck guide for some billionaire (oil & natural gas money) in LA. He gets all the toys he needs, he gets any shotguns he wants and they pay him to duck hunt all year. The guide quarters he stays in is a 2500 square foot "cabin" with all the amenities you could want and there are people there that clean and prepare the ducks for the hunters. I don't think the pay is all that great, but hunting and getting paid for it sounds good to me.

Would also love to work for rich people that want to set up their newly aquired hunting ranches. Get one established with plots, feeding programs, stand locations etc then move on to the next one.

Country music singer. Well, a successful one. The stage and mic is addicting.

Plus you'll get invited to hunt and fish wherever you want.
