how did united manage to turn it around? i feel like at the beginning of the season everyone was worried about their central midfield and defensive woes

Those are still issues, though they have gotten better. Everyone else is just so bad.

They still suck, just the rest of the EPL sucks more. The EPL is really down this year.

RvP and Rooney meshed much quicker and better than anyone expected. Bringing Rooney back to more of a CAM position worked best for both.
In the central midfield, Cleverley made the transition from good young rotation piece to a first-choice starter.
Defensively, the older guys got healthy and basically have done just enough to keep us outscoring the other guys. Smalling and Jones are developing, but make some big mistakes from time to time. De Gea is prone to give up an easy one.
We're dominating because everyone else is down, really. Otherwise it'd be a tight race.

Cleverley has stayed healthy, and while they have had some injury problems at center back, Rafael and Evra have played out of their minds, providing width as well.
Most of their problems in the center of midfield were because neither ancient Scholes nor Michael Carrick were going to push forward.
