Most grey shirts only take 9 hours their 1st semester. Otherwise, they lose the major benefit of greyshirting (delaying their eligibility clock).

You go full time student (on scholarship in Jan. instead of Aug.), and then have 5 years to play 4 (instead of 4 to play 4 if you redshirt). Huge advantage to borderline SEC worthy players and injured players. Plus, you allow your team to sign more people your initial year.

So a grayshirt offer doesn't ever mean that a player can pay his own way full time for a semester as a preferred walk-on and then get a scholarship in the spring? It never happens that way? I know that it usually means a delayed full-time enrollment; I just wanted to know if a player like Lawson gets that choice.
