Sure a lot of misinformation in this thread. First, cormorants are different from "water turkeys," which are actually called anhingas. Second, cormorants (two species in LA) and anhingas are both protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which has nothing to do with the Japanese and their use of cormorants for fishing. Third, as one poster mentioned, numerous food habit studies have indicated that cormorants typically feed on shad and other non-game fish. Fourth, one would think that people who spend a lot of time in the woods and on the water would be able to identify some of our most common birds. I could go on.

Editorial comment, I have never understood the joy of killing things just to kill them. If you don't eat it and it is not causing you a serious problem, why would you kill it?
