I for one do not mind the hire of Rob Ryan. I know people say Gregg Williams was a guy who came in and did things that were frowned upon, but the fact is he got the talent lacking defense to be middle of the road and take away the ball. Rob Ryan has the same edge about him and the ego to go with it. If he is willing to come in and not knock heads with Payton, with the right players through the draft and FA it isnt a bad hire. All the defense needs is to be top 15 and take away the ball.

In 1995, as Cardinals CB coach, his team led the league with 42 takeaways 32 of which were interceptions.

In 1997-99 he was ranked coordinator of the year while putting together a top 5 defense in the nation all three years.

From 2000-03 Ryan was one of the best linebackers coaches in the NFL when he helped New England rank 7th in defense allowing a league low 17pts per game.

2006 as the Raiders DC, he put together a defense that ranked 3rd in yds allowed and 18th in pts allowed.

As Cowboys DC, Ryan's defense was not as good as in recent NFL jobs. The Cowboys did still put up 14th in yds allowed and 16th in pts allowed.

With the right people in house, and an offense like the Saints have he could be succesful.

I dont hate the hire, but I'm not in love with it either.

I just hope he doesn't run his mouth too much. Its not hard to imagine Rob Ryan in the exact scenario Gregg Williams got us fricked for.

I honestly thought a young, up and comer was the best option. Much like Payton in '06. Someone with something to prove and a fresh imagination.

My main two concerns with Ryan are 1.) Regardless of injuries, his defense in Dallas struggled with consistency with much more talent than we have right now. 2.) Say he does come out and have a good year, based on name recognition and this league's "what have you done for me lately" theory, there very well could be a few teams willing to give him a shot at head coach. Point being he could end up being a rental if he does have success.

I trust Payton and he usually seems to make good decisions regarding his staff, so I'll be anxious to see how it plays out.
