re: Why Can't the United States Assemble a Championship Soccer Team?

It isn't a matter of belief. More like common sense.

quote:your reference was about Barça´s defense against English attackers. Piqué is bigger than anyone you refer to, and Puyol plays bigger than he is. They get in the fray, don´t shy away from it, so I don´t understand your argument. I can´t fricking believe I´m defending Barça defenders but I am. Your logic is flawed.
because i believe that size and power should be equally treated as passing and possession?
Basically, you´re saying they´re being penalized in the open field (I assume you now recognize your attacking scenario holds no water), for kicking smaller players.
Were they larger, there would be no problem. They would automatically not go down, and we´d have rockém sockém robots all day long. frick the ball.
Makes no sense.

The second biggest surprise in this thread.

That wouldn't be all bad
Someone would resurrect the Bramble-Onyewu center back pairing

it was one example. the same applies to any other team with superior size who is not allowed to use it. real is hurt by this
quote:
Piqué is bigger than anyone you refer to,
and he's the anti puyol b/c he plays a lot smaller than he is. i like pique, though

for kicking smaller players.
no. using your body to get position against another player's body has nothing to do with kicking anything

well a small team would have to obtain bigger players or face the disadvantage, yes.

quote:you´re referring to the aerial game, I believe. I insist, in midfield and open field, your ´bigger´ players are going THROUGH the player, and it does not matter whether they are bigger, smaller, or the same size. It is a foul.
no. using your body to get position against another player's body has nothing to do with kicking anything
The problem is the dominion of the ball. It just so happens they are smaller, and for some reason, you think they receive preferential treatment.
Wayne Rooney is pretty damned proficient, technically speaking, and draws alot of fouls. I don´t think you´d bitch about him being fouled, at least from a player size standpoint (although I don´t think he´s very big either, maybe 5´10 at best).
´Tis very simple.

same arguments can apply without kicking
positioning your body to disrupt the body placement of a midfielder isn't a bad thing, objectively
rewarding the smaller player for losing those battles (not kicking) because he's smaller is bullshite to me

what about when they position themselves to prevent the offensive player from coming through?
that's sound strategy and...a foul in today's game

I still have my Newcastle Onyewu jersey, so I'm game.

It´s like a charge in basketball. Depends upon when they get there (al cruce).
Basically, technical proficiency bothers you, as you see it as an unfair advantage.

OK. I was just wondering, in order to immerse even further in this discussion.
Anyway, I get what you´re saying, but it´s not true IMO. You seem to think they get preferential treatment, or they´ve changed the way the game is officiated.
I think it´s clear this is not true. You´d either better make a tremendously amazing clean tackle (very difficult to do, as the ball is ´stuck´to their foot), or position with sufficient time to ´draw the charge´ (blocking or obstruction), which also is difficult, because they´re going to go around you.
´Tis a major quandary.
Play a pefect match, hope you get them out of their game, or serendipity, are your best bets.
Serendipity has occurred before, I don´t know how to intensify the frequency of said occurrence.

I used to think SlowFlo was one of the more knowledgeable people here. But that was about 1.5 years ago when I first joined the board. Not sure what the deal is now, but I've pretty much disagreed with everything he's said.
Beast and Dandy are right, and I'm in complete agreement with them. Thenry and other have also hit the nail on the head.
And beast, nice avy.

He is, with respect to TD as a whole. However, he knows less than most soccer board posters (like myself), since he is a casual soccer fan. I usually agree with him when it comes to other sports.

When I first started posting here you were one of the names I saw more often, so I guess I kind of just assumed

Can someone summarize just this thread is? Do people still believe that athletic ability has anything to do with skill? I find that people in the U.S. confuse the two as if they are synonymous.
