I've read on other money boards that others have successfully signed up for the sapphire preferred and just before the annual fee is due, switched to the non-preferred (zero fees) with no problems.
Might be another option if you do not get it waived.

Random question for those of you that have this card. I was pre approved for this card so I took the bait and signed up yesterday. (I have 6 weddings I have to fly to this year )
I have two questions with regard to this card:
1) If I use the points to buy a delta flight will I get the MQM miles for flying ($500 for travel vs $400 for Cash back)
2) If I get my GF to sign up can she transfer the miles into my acct without a fee?

the card itself is pretty tight. its thick and heavy. I swear like 75% of the time when I use it the person handling it is amazed with it. If I was single it would have gotten me laid at least 3 times by my calculation.
One idiot woman even asked me if it was made out of lead.
