Looking for discussion really. With a lot of people probably buying a variety of ammo in the respective calibers, should more attention be paid to ballistics, field adjustments, etc?

Example: OBer zeroes his AR with .223 55 grain Nosler ballistic tip and has a few boxes of that. But he also buys a few boxes of 69 gr BTHP and maybe some other types and sizes.

Can he expect a significant difference between them, ballistics-wise, when putting rounds downrange?

If that is true, one lesson is probably to bite the bullet and buy in bulk rather than hodge-podge.

Input, Advice, Tits?

Anything within 100 meters probably won't be effected much.

If you are buying in bulk, chances are you are not buying quality. Second, if you didnt think about this before ordering 17 different brands, all different weights, then you probably wouldn't notice anyways.

I am only picky about what ammo goes through my hunting AR and my Xbolt. The rest of my guns gets the cheapest brass there is.

55grain is only part of the equation. What powder, case OAL, primers, and bullet type matter too.

Again, 99% of the people on here, myself included, will never know the difference.

The only time I will "need" all of my stash is when the S hits the F. When that happens I'll have more to worry about than if all my ammo has the same ballistics.

I didnt want to single you out but it just worked out that way.

But yeah, these Bushmasters and other rifles of the sort wont exactly care what you feed it. They go boom and the bullet goes in a general direction. Not to mention, most are shooting irons, red dots, or at the most, 3x9s.

To answer the original OP, as mentioned by some already, inside 100 yards it will not matter for self defense purposes. You will hit your target reasonably close to point of aim for it to do what you ask of it. I normally shoot 55 gr ammo in mine. I have tried many different brands, both brass and steel cased, and the change in impact point has usually been less than 2 inches at 100 yards. If you swith to different grain bullets, the impact point will vary more but even going to 77 gr bullets the POI will probably not change by more than 4" at 100 yds. What is more important, especially with the heavier gr bullets like 69 and 77 gr, is to be sure you have the proper rifling twist to stabilize the bullet. For 55 gr bullets, the original 1-12 twist works great. For 62 gr bullets 1-9 works fine and for the heavier weights, 1-7 is what you need. You can shoot a 55 gr bullet in a 1-9 or 1-7 twist and it will be accurate but overstabilized and cause less damage when it hits. But if you try to shoot a 77 gr bullet in a 1-12 twist barrel, it will cause the bullet to start tumbling before it hits the target as it is not spinning fast enough to stabilize it. It will not be very accurate at all.

As for me, I shoot the 55 gr in a 1-9 twist barrel and I buy in bulk so I dont have to worry about changing my sight in at all. However, I do not worry so much about practicing with different brands of 55 gr ammo. It is close enough.

Accuracy not important for impending zombie apocalypse. Zombies are large slow targets, generally shot at close range. Also not important when reselling to other gunnutz at large profit.

I have several boxes of cartridges for my rifles that are 10-15 years old. I suspect most of this ammo will be gathering dust for a long time after this silliness blows over.
