The bad news Pro Football Focus ranked Ed Reed 59th among 88 qualifying safeties in 2012.
Reed is certainly well into his decline phase at age 34. He missed 15 tackles and allowed 17.3 yards per catch this season, both seventh-worst among safeties

In other words he's a definite improvement. Got it.

Edt: I heard the other day where I think it was Harbaugh that said Ed wants to get into coaching. I wonder if we could get Ed on the cheap and pay him a coaches salary to be a player coach. My guess is the league doesn't allow this, but I don't know for sure.

Edt2: We could then move Jenkins back to safety and shore up that spot without needing to burn a draft pic.

Ed definitely looks the part of a one year going out contract guy. Cost is more the issue than ability with the Saints cap issues. Unfortunately I think he would have several suitors (Belichick a huge Reed fan). Sharper was cheap cuz there was no market for him.

How about Richard Seymour as another stop gap vet on the D line? Same thing, IF affordable.

i wouldn't mind Reed in NO - he is a player, sure he is on the decline some, but like the poster above said - if we can get performance out of him in the way that Sharper did, why not take a chance.
