Different era, different game. Namath played in a time where offensive linemen couldn't use their hands to block and where defensive backs could mug the wide receiver all the way down the field without being penalized. He was the first 4,000-yard passer in NFL history and he did it with those restrictive rules in a 14-game schedule. The next guy to do it wouldn't do it for more than a decade, with more modern rules and a 16-game schedule.
